Reconstituted mother-of-pearl, on the other hand, is made from compressed shell powder bound with resin. It is cheaper, more uniform, but it loses the essence of what makes the material valuable: the natural variations in color and light.

How to distinguish them? Genuine mother-of-pearl always presents slight irregularities – shades ranging from pearly white to ivory, sometimes with pink, green, or silver reflections depending on the lighting.
