At KIFF KIFF, we love objects that tell a story. Behind each piece of mother-of-pearl jewelry, each buffalo horn sculpture, or each handcrafted creation from northern Thailand, lies precious expertise, gestures passed down through generations, and men and women who perpetuate unique traditions.

Our encounter with Zooey, a Korean-born designer who has been living in northern Thailand for several years, was a true love at first sight. Passionate about natural materials and Southeast Asian artisanal crafts, she has been developing collections for several years that highlight the work of local artisans while preserving traditional techniques that are sometimes threatened with disappearance.

Mother-of-pearl jewelry: the natural beauty of the material

Mother-of-pearl is a fascinating natural material, used for centuries in the creation of jewelry and precious objects. Harvested from seashells, it captivates with its unique iridescent reflections that vary with the light.

In Zooey's partner workshops, each pendant is hand-cut, polished, and sculpted. Flowers, animals, fruits, or nature-inspired motifs come to life through meticulous work that reveals all the natural beauty of the material.

Each piece is unique. The nuances, reflections, and natural variations of mother-of-pearl testify to its authenticity and make each piece of jewelry different.

Buffalo horn objects: sustainable and traditional craftsmanship

Decorative objects made from buffalo horn hold an important place in the traditional craftsmanship of northern Thailand.

The material used comes exclusively from buffaloes raised for agriculture and food. The horns are recovered and then handcrafted, in a process that values a natural material that would otherwise be wasted.

After several stages of cutting, heating, shaping, and polishing, artisans create decorative objects with organic forms and natural shades ranging from deep black to amber beige.

Each creation reveals the unique patterns of the horn and highlights the richness of a living material worked without industrial processes.

Work done with the Kayan communities

Some creations are also made with women from the Kayan communities, often known as "giraffe women." Originally from the border regions between Burma (Myanmar) and Thailand, several families now live in villages and refugee camps in northern Thailand.

Through crafts, these women can preserve a part of their culture while developing a complementary economic activity. They participate in particular in the creation of certain necklaces, weavings, and ornaments made by hand according to traditional techniques passed down within their community.

These collaborations help support unique cultural know-how and create income opportunities for often vulnerable populations.
