CAGOLE, FADA, TÉ! The lexicon of Southern French expressions
Some words aren't translated, they're lived. In the South of France, certain expressions alone carry a whole character, an accent, a way of loving and living. It's this spirit that inspired the MOTIFF PARLANT collection: hand-embroidered bullion brooches, postcards, and notebooks that celebrate this Southern dialect, without ever making fun of it.
Here is a lexicon of these expressions, to understand where they come from and why they deserve to be worn, given, or proudly displayed.
CAGOLE
The "cagole" is a cult figure from Marseille. Bleached hair, bold makeup, frank speech, and fierce pride. Long used pejoratively, the word has been reclaimed with pride by those it described: being a cagole means refusing to apologize for fully existing.

FADA
A bit crazy, overflowing with passion, unable to do things by halves: that's what a "fada" is. The word comes from Provençal and refers to someone a bit extravagant, but always endearing. Being a fada, in the South, is never an insult: it's often a disguised compliment.

TÉ !
Impossible to translate, "TÉ!" is used in every sauce: to mark surprise, obviousness, annoyance, or simply to punctuate a sentence with panache. It's the most emblematic interjection of the Marseillaise dialect, one that claps and needs no explanation to be understood... when you're from the area.

PEUCHÈRE
"Peuchère" is undoubtedly the tenderest expression in the Provençal repertoire. It expresses compassion, endearment, or a touch of mocking sympathy, much like one might say "the poor dear" or "oh dear" elsewhere, but with much more warmth.

MA GATÉE
A term of affection popularized notably by the Marseillaise rap scene, "ma gatée" addresses a woman one cherishes, admires, or compliments wholeheartedly. It's gentle, direct, and immediately sounds like a declaration.

TÊTE D'AÏ
A savory expression to describe someone a bit stubborn, pig-headed, who always does things their own way. "Aï" refers to the donkey in Provençal, known for its strong character. Saying it to someone is a tender tease about their legendary stubbornness.
